A rare and well-preserved example, this ca. 1958 Blancpain Aqua Lung is a cornerstone in the history of professional dive watches. Housed in a 41 mm stainless steel screw-back case with a unidirectional rotating bezel, it showcases the iconic 12 / 3 / 6 / 9 dial layout typical of Fifty Fathoms and Aqua Lung models of the era. The puffy luminous material has aged beautifully, and the original Bakelite bezel remains perfectly intact.
Powered by the automatic AS 1361N caliber with 17 jewels, it is fitted on a classic black Tropic strap and is in proper working condition.
The “Aqua-Lung” name on the dial honors the world’s first open-circuit SCUBA, invented in 1942 by Jacques Cousteau and Émile Gagnan. Their company, La Spirotechnique, later partnered with Blancpain to create co-branded tool watches for professional divers. This collaboration culminated in pieces like this one, first seen on the cover of a U.S. Divers catalogue in 1958.
